boat will not go

1984 johnson 115 will not go into gear. While going do the river it just seemed to pop out of gear now it will not go forward or reverse. Checked the cable all is good there. What should I check next?

You can remove the lower unit and manual try to shift the unit into gear. If still no success the the problem is internal.
