1985 4 HP Armature Removal

Trying to get the crankcase and cylinder apart and need to get the armature off and my CD manual says that there are screws around the perimeter that secure it to the support and retaining ring below it but there are none. Looks like there are screws from below but can't get at them.

Did a previous owner mess something up or are the screws underneath the electrical components and I have to remove some of them?

Unfortunately the manual is right. There should be some screws that will allow your to remove the plate.

I loosened two Phillips head screws near the inside edge of the plate that didn't appear to be holding any of he components but it's attached as firmly as ever. I guess I'll remove some of the components to see if I can find some screws.

Removing Armature Plate Success Now Needle Bearing Questionn

Figured it out. Removed two more phillips head screws that run through the laminations that holds the coil and then pried the plate up.

Took the base plate off and opened up the crank case but the needle bearing on the crank shaft came apart and the needles spilled out. Looks like the liners are still there. How to get the needles back on the shaft? Do you grease the shaft and set the needles around the shaft and carefully set the crank shaft back in place?

Those, unfortunately, are very hard. you can try assembly lube to hold them in place.
